The fierce morning sun beats down, and shade is scarce at the main temple complex in My Son, Vietnam. The site was the primary religious center and royal burial grounds for the Champa kingdom, which flourished from 400 to 1500 A.D. and encompassed most of south and central Vietnam. The temples were dedicated to the worship of the Hindu god Shiva. The most important structures were excavated and restored under French colonial rule, but many were heavily damaged or completely destroyed by American bombing during the Vietnam War. April 25, 2012.
