Soldiers from Company A, 1st Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment are establishing combat outposts in the eastern half of the city,  a stronghold for insurgents. Many residents of Mosul are cordial with U.S. troops, but they also maintain their distance, reflecting a deep ambivalence about being squeezed between U.S. and Iraqi government forces and the various insurgent groups who remain powerful in the city.
