A metal folding chair sits inside a mass detention cell at Tuol Sleng prison in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. The numbers on the wall mark where prisoners lay when shackled together by means of a large iron bar. Prisoners slept with their heads in opposite directions, and were not issued mats, mosquito nets or blankets. They were also prohibited from speaking to each other. Prisoners were kept under these conditions except for daily inspections and interrogation sessions. All but a handful of the estimated 17,000 people who passed through Tuol Sleng were eventually transferred to the Killing Fields and murdered. March 1, 2012.
