20090202Kabul-21.JPG

Two men smoke opium while another drifts in a narcotic haze inside the ruins of the former Soviet Cultural Center in Kabul, Afghanistan. More than 90 percent of the world's opium -- from which heroin is derived-- is produced in Afghanistan, and its cheap availability is wreaking havoc on a society already ravaged by 30 years of war. More than 2,000 addicts a day gather to use opium and heroin inside the derelict structure, which was almost completely destroyed during the 1992-1994 civil war. Feb. 2, 2009.
