A soldier with Company D, 1st Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment walks past the ruins of the ancient citadel in Zor Shar, or the Old City, of Kandahar, Afghanistan. Situated on an extensive plateau and tucked away against the side of a mountain on Kandahar's western side, the bastion and old city date back to the time of Alexander the Great. The citadel was destroyed in 1738 by Nader Shah Afshar of Persia, but thousands of people live in newer structures built among the old mud ruins. Oct. 4, 2010. DREW BROWN/STARS AND STRIPES
