Phung Huynh Thi, 63, worked from 1967 to 1972 as a PX cashier at the U.S. Special Forces camp in Nha Trang, Vietnam. After the war ended in 1975, she discovered that her father -- whom she thought was dead -- had been serving with the Viet Cong. "I never knew my father was VC," she says. "My mother never told me." Wanting to join her sister, who had married a Special Forces officer and moved to Washington state, she tried to flee the country on three separate occasions, but she was caught each time, imprisoned and interrogated. "Everyday, they would come and ask me the same questions," she recalls. "But I never told them I worked for the Americans." Married since 2009 to a New Zealand citizen, she says she no longer dreams of leaving. "Now I think to stay in Vietnam is better for me," she says. "Now I'm too old to go. Now I have a good man."
