Shoes line the steps of the Mieu Temple inside the Citadel in the former imperial capital of Hue, Vietnam. Built in 1821, the temple honors the emperors of the Nguyen Dynasty, the last of whom abdicated in 1945, as Vietnam sought independence from the French. The temple was one of those least damaged by heavy fighting during the Tet Offensive of 1968, at the height of the Vietnam War. April 21, 2013.
