20120301TuolSleng-36.JPG

Sunlight seeping through a barred and shuttered window barely illuminates an individual detention cell at the Tuol Sleng prison in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Prisoners were kept shackled in the cells, which measure only about two feet by five feet, at all times, except for daily inspection and interrogation sessions. Prisoners generally spent two to three months in Tuol Sleng, where they were forced to confess to various crimes against the regime, and then murdered in the Killing Fields. Only a handful of the estimated 17,000 people who passed through Tuol Sleng survived. March 1, 2012.
