Mugshots of taken of prisoners, including a young boy, are on display at the Tuol Sleng prison in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Initially, most of the estimated 17,000 victims who passed through Tuol Sleng were officials and soldiers of the previous regime, but the educated classes and religious figures were also marked for extermination. Later, as the Khmer Rouge turned upon itself, most victims were officials accused of plotting against the regime. Entire families were often arrested together, brutally interrogated for months and made to confess to a list of political crimes. All but a handful of people who passed through Tuol Sleng were later murdered in the Killing Fields. March 1, 2012.
