A bone and a shred of clothing sit atop a tree stump at the Choeung Ek Genocidal Center near Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Choeung Ek is the best known of the more than 300 mass execution sites known as the Killing Fields that were used by the Khmer Rouge from 1975 to 1979. Burial pits containing 8,895 bodies were discovered here after Vietnamese troops ousted the regime in 1979. But authorities estimate that as many as 17,000 people were killed and buried here. Skulls, bones and teeth continue to surface at Choeung Ek, especially after heavy rains. March 1, 2012.
