Light from the outside streams into a room full of opium and heroin addicts in the ruins of the former Soviet Cultural Center in Kabul, Afghanistan. More than 90 percent of the world's opium--from which heroin is derived--comes from Afghanistan, and its cheap availability is wreaking havoc on a society already ravaged by 30 years of war. As many as 2,000 addicts gather each day to get high inside in derelict building, which was almost completely destroyed during the 1992-1994 civil war. Feb. 2, 2009.
