Children gather near a row of shiny new bicycles at a school in the rural highlands district of A Luoi in central Vietnam. In the past two years, war veteran Mark Oconnor has given away nearly 150 bicycles to poor students in the mostly ethnic minority district so they can get to school easier. “I just feel like the United States hasn’t done enough to help these people since the war,” said Oconnor, 64, of Sioux Falls, S.D., who served in Vietnam from 1970 to 1971. “And I just feel like I took more than I gave, so I’m giving back now.” April 8, 2015.
