Drug addicts stand inside a room in the ruins of the former Soviet Cultural Center in Kabul, Afghanistan. Afghanistan produces more than 90 percent of the world's opium--from which heroin is derived--and its cheap availability is wreaking havoc on a society already ravaged by 30 years of war. As many as 2,000 addicts gather each day to get high inside the derelict structure, which was almost completely destroyed during the 1992-1994 civil war. Feb. 2, 2009.
