A concrete bunker overlooks the Hai Van Pass near Da Nang, Vietnam. French soldiers built the structure during their losing struggle against Viet Minh guerrillas from 1945 to 1954, and U.S. troops occupied it and others nearby during the Vietnam War a decade later. The bunkers are scarred with numerous bullet holes, an enduring testimony to the frequent combat that once took place here. Aug. 12, 2012.
